An introduction to Lua

19th April, 2011

Lua is a powerful, fast, lightweight, embeddable scripting language.

Lua combines simple procedural syntax with powerful data description constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua is dynamically typed, runs by interpreting bytecode for a register-based virtual machine and has automatic memory management with incremental garbage collection, making it ideal for configuration, scripting, and rapid prototyping.

This talk is going to be given by Matthew Wild, an experienced software developer, having originally fallen in love with the art of programming at the age of 9.

A developed strong belief in the keep it “simple” approach led to him quickly adopting Lua as his language of choice for many projects. Combining this with his keen interest in networking and protocols Matthew developed Prosody, a project to write a fully-fledged XMPP server in Lua.
